“So, what do you think?  With God on our side like this, how can we lose?” –Romans 8:31 (MSG)

After over 40 years in ministry, I can’t remember the first person I received into the Church; but I vividly remember the first one I drove out.  James was a faithful member of the first congregation I pastored.  When I noticed that he no longer attended our worship services, I decided to stop by his house and check on him.  I inquired, “I’ve noticed you haven’t been at church lately.  Is anything wrong?”  James replied, “Yes there is, Pat.  It’s your preaching.”  He explained, “All week people tell me what’s wrong with my life.  So, when I go to church, I need to hear that God loves me and that there is hope for someone like me.”  I was stunned, but so very grateful for his feedback.

James never came back to that church while I was their pastor.  But I will never forget the lesson he taught me that day:  People long to hear that God loves them and that there is hope for their lives, no matter how messed up or broken we are.  That good and glorious news is found in the story of Jesus, the Expression of God’s love for us and the only Hope for the world.  Jesus shows us that God is, indeed, on our side.  And, “with God on our side like this, how can we lose?”

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your unimaginable and relentless love for the world.  May all I do and say remind others of that God is for them and loves them.

Thought for the day: God is on my side
