UM Judicial Council meets April 26-28
The highest judicial body of the UMC meets in closed session April 26-28 in Overland Park, Kansas, and is expected to take under consideration petitions to reconsider decisions 1031 and 1032 handed down by the Council at their meeting in Houston last fall. Both decisions relate to actions taken by the Virginia Annual Conference against the Rev. Edward Johnson for his refusal to admit a practicing gay man into membership at a local church. Decision 1031 pertains to errors in the complaint process, while 1032 deals with a pastor’s authority to exercise judgment in determining a person’s readiness to be received into membership. In each case, the Council reversed decisions of church law made by Bishop Charlene Kammerer and ruled in favor of Rev. Johnson.
The Judicial Council may, by a majority vote, reconsider any ruling or action it has taken either on its own motion, or on a petition filed by a party to the proceedings. Both Bishop Kammerer and the Virginia Board of Ordained Ministry filed requests for reconsideration of the decisions. Written briefs filed by the parties, as well as some by non-parties, will be considered by council members and a vote taken on each of the motions. The Council may choose to deny reconsideration or to grant it. If it votes to reconsider, it could potentially issue a decision immediately or place the matter on the fall docket. Granting reconsideration would not necessarily mean a change in the outcome.
No decisions are expected to be available until some time the following week. All decisions of the Judicial Council are posted on their website at www.umc.org. According to the Council’s rules, no member may interpret or comment on any decision. The meeting docket can be found at archives.umc.org/uploads/documents/Spring2006Docket.pdf <http://archives.umc.org/uploads/documents/Spring2006Docket.pdf> . The motions to reconsider were received after the docket had been set; thus they do not appear on the docket, but will be heard along with other non-docket items at some point during the four-day meeting.
Youth raise over $4.6 million through Souper Bowl of Caring
2006 was a record year for the Souper Bowl of Caring, where over 11,500 youth organizations raised over $4.6 million for local charities across the country. In Texas, 138 Methodist congregations participated and raised $68,157. "Youth everywhere are demonstrating how small efforts can make a huge impact in the fight against hunger and poverty," exclaimed Brad Smith, founder and executive director of the Souper Bowl of Caring. "We applaud everyone who used the Souper Bowl of Caring to step outside of themselves and help their neighbors in need."
Youth across the country collected one-dollar donations in large soup pots on or near Feb. 5. Each group donated their money directly to the charity of their choice—no money was sent to Souper Bowl of Caring headquarters. Organizers simply asked that groups report their collection amount so a national total can be determined. Groups that participated and have not reported can still report at www.souperbowl.org or by calling 800-358-SOUP(7687).
Since beginning with a prayer in a single South Carolina church, the Souper Bowl of Caring has raised close to $33 million for hungry and hurting people. Visit www.souperbowl.org to see pictures and stories shared by this year’s participants. America's teens are transforming Super Bowl weekend into the nation's largest youth-led day of giving through the Souper Bowl of Caring. Asking for only $1 on one day-Super Bowl Sunday-this event encourages people of all ages to care for their neighbors in need. Armed with soup pots, kids in all 50 states collect at church, school and retail outlets, and every penny raised is given to local charities as selected by each group. Souper Bowl of Caring is endorsed by NFL owners and has seen almost $33 million given to neighbors in need. It's $1. It's one day. It all adds up!

This is an extension of the previous deadline so that no one will be overlooked. Send to Mary Meadows at mmeadows@fumcwaco.org and use “Women in Ministry” in the subject line. Please submit photos in JPG format, using “YOURNAME.JPG.”
Pension Program (repeat)
General Conference 2004 approved a new United Methodist Pension Program for all eligible clergy … Clergy Retirement Security Program (CRSP). In order to introduce and explain this new pension program and its funding prior to its presentation at Annual Conference (June 4-7), the Central Texas Conference Board of Pensions has scheduled an event in each district. Only one event remains — Weatherford District: 3 p.m. May 7 at Aledo UMC. These district meetings are critically important for every clergy person and chairs of each local church Pastor Parish Relations Committee, Finance Committee, and business administrator.
DaVinci Code: What’s the gospel truth?
Dan Brown’s phenomenal best-seller, The DaVinci Code, stood the Christian world on end when it was released in 2003. The May 19 release of a major motion picture based on Brown’s book, starring Tom Hanks, already is sending tremors through churches throughout the country as Christians wrestle with some of the claims regarding Jesus and the early church that Brown makes in his fictionalized account of the modern-day quest for the Holy Grail.
It’s just fiction, of course, but still … could any of it be true? If you’re looking for simple entertainment, read Brown’s book and mark your calendar for the movie’s release. If you’re looking for the truth, plan to join a discussion at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 4, for “Decoding Jesus: The Truth Behind the DaVinci Code.”
Arborlawn UMC in west Fort Worth welcome Dr. Carolyn Osiek, Fischer Catholic Professor of New Testament at TCU’s Brite Divinity School, in examining some of the issues raised in Brown’s work – Jesus’ and the early church’s understanding of his divinity, the development of the early church and the role that women played in the evolution of the Christian movement – separating fact from fiction using Scripture and historical evidence.
Dr. Osiek holds a doctorate in New Testament and Christian Origins from Harvard University and is past president of the Catholic Biblical Association and the Society of Biblical Literature. She is editor of the 15-volume Message of Biblical Spirituality series and is a former associate editor of The Bible Today and New Testament book editor of the Catholic Biblical Quarterly. She has written extensively on the role of women and the structure of the family during New Testament times and the early church and is currently working on an Early Christian Patronage and the Language of Equality. “Decoding Jesus” is free and open to the public, so invite a friend. Dr. Osiek will take questions from the audience.
