Small Church Initiative
The Small Church Initiative (SCI) component of the HCI process isdesigned to specifically address to top obstacles of the small membership church. Through a combination of continuous learning, coaching and consultation, this process helps congregations more effectively join God in God’s mission. After having successfully implemented this process in the Missouri Annual Conference for several years, we are bringing this process of transformation to the Central Texas Conference.
The first phase includes six monthly four-hour workshops for pastors and laity. The requirements to participate in Phase 1 are:
- Desire to grow
- Urgency to grow
- Pastor plus 10 percent average worship attendance to participate in workshops.
Phase 1 includes built-in momentum with action steps and accountability throughout the process. It gives pastors and laity the opportunity to learn together. During this phase, the SCI team from each church will learn more about Phase 2 and how to prepare their congregation for the possibility of a SCI consultation.
The optional second phase includes a full-day church consultation on-site with a trained consultant who will provide key congregational prescriptions for change that leads to growth. Churches who accept the recommendations receive on-going congregational coaching for 12 months. This phase also includes pastor participation in a peer mentoring group for 12 months following the consultation.
Participating in an SCI Workshop
Application: Applications to join an SCI workshop will be available online or from your District Superintendent and will be accepted July through October 2015. Churches accepted into a SCI workshop will be open to change, encouraged by peer development and eager to learn.

Materials: Each participant in the SCI workshop will receive a complete workbook which contains key information on each topic as well as room for notes. The facilitators will use a guide which contains all the information they need to lead each session as well as a CD of all PowerPoint presentations.
