Doyle Allen, executive director of Mission Ministries and assistant to the bishop, is retiring. You can help in honoring him and his long service from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, may 17 at St. Andrew’s UMC, Fort Worth.  He will be completing 36 effective years in ministry.

Names & Contact Information Needed for Entering College Students

One of the best ministries the UMC offers our graduating high school students is the opportunity to connect with a campus ministry at their new college or university. As a pastor, you can help that process by sending the names of your students who are planning to attend any of the institutions where this conference has campus ministries to the campus minister as soon as possible. Since most schools now comply with HIPPA rules and do not make names and contact information available, pastors need to send their students’ names and their contact information. The CTC has campus ministries at Tarleton State, Baylor, TCU, UTA, Weatherford College, Navarro College and Hill College and chaplains at Southwestern and Texas Wesleyan. Their contact information is in the Conference Journal at pages 231-232.

CTC Among 10 Conferences Targeted for ‘Operation Healing Hope’

Preventable, treatable condition affects 2-3 million women worldwide

(GBCS) A year-long initiative to engage UMs in an international effort to eradicate a preventable, treatable condition called obstetric fistula will focus on 10 UM annual conferences, including the Central Texas Conference. “Operation Healing Hope” is funded by a grant from the United Nations Foundation and being conducted by the UM General Board of Church & Society. Several international organizations are involved in drawing attention to obstetric fistula, which affects 2-3 million women and girls. Victims are mostly young, poor and live in rural areas far from emergency health services. In western countries where Caesarean sections are available, the condition is virtually non-existent. The last U. S. hospital devoted to care for fistula victims reportedly closed in 1895, according to the Rev. Jill Wiley, GBCS consultant for Operation Healing Hope. Liberian President Sails Through ‘Daily Show’ Interview

(UMNS)—Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, a UM and the first female president of Liberia, was poised, serene and smiling through national appearances on U.S. television even though her 13-year-old grandson gave her a “heads up” about one of the talk show hosts she was meeting. “He told me, ‘You are going to be meeting Jon Stewart. Grandma you have to be prepared,’” she said during her interview with the host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” Stewart, who usually plays for laughs, was nothing but respectful when he interviewed Sirleaf on the April 21 broadcast. Sirleaf is on a book tour promoting her memoir, “This Child Will Be Great.” EDITOR’S NOTE: About this time last year, President Sirleaf was addressing the UM General Conference in Fort Worth.  For more details: http://www.umc.org/site/apps/nlnet/content3.aspx?c=lwL4KnN1LtH&b=2429867&ct=6935431&tr=y&auid=4780319.

Web Site Opens Doors to Worship, Service

(UMNS)—Listen to “There Will Be a Day” by Jeremy Camp. Discuss ideas to improve health care. Find ways to heal the planet at a congregation near you. There are thousands of ways to be church in the world, and UMs do not want to miss any of them in an innovative Web site inviting a new generation into a life of faith and service. Backed by a national advertising campaign, the UMC on April 20 launched . www.tenthousanddoors.org.
The site is part of the denomination’s Rethink Church campaign, which is using nontraditional methods to reach young adults and others in relevant ways.

Resources Available for Congregations in Challenging Times

(UMNS)—The Lewis Center for Church Leadership has a new set of resources to help congregations with ministry in challenging times. The 2009 “Funding Your Congregations' Vision Resource Package” covers topics from moving from a “pay the bills” to a “live the vision” mentality to preparing a spiritual foundation for giving. The package also includes presentations by Lewis Center Director Lovett H. Weems, Jr. and Wesley Seminary President David McAllister-Wilson, as well as a series of PowerPoint presentations, templates, handouts, and other resources useful in congregational settings. The presentations are available in audio or video format, with other documents on a CD. Ordering information is available at http://www.churchleadership.com/resources/bookstore.html.

Minnesota team responds to Red River flooding

(UMNS)—A disaster response team from the Minnesota Annual Conference will head to the Red River valley area by the end of April to address flooding in the Moorhead/Fargo region. The conference’s initial recovery work will probably take about four weeks, according to the Heather Klason, the conference disaster response coordinator. Teams will be rotated in and out of the region during that time. Minnesota and North Dakota Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster are collaborating on long-term recovery. A grant from the UM Committee on Relief will aid these efforts. Volunteers for future work teams should contact Lorna Jost at umvin-ncj@brookings.net or 605-692-3390. To assist financially, drop checks in church offering plates or mail them directly to UMCOR, P.O. Box 9068, New York, NY 10087. Write Advance #901670 Domestic Disaster Response, Red River Floods, on the memo line. Credit-card donations can be made online or by calling (800) 554-8583.

Several Notable Items from GBGM

The General Board of Global Ministries has several noteworthy items:

Online feature on a new songbook and CD from Global Praise, "Put Your Arms Around the World," for children. It's a neat package of song, story, and activity suggestions on mission and its meaning. The release is online at http://gbgm-umc.org/global_news/full_article.cfm?articleid=5381.

A refreshing feature on the plans of Mike Lightfoot, music director at First Church, Richardson, Texas, to run a 56-miles race in South Africa, with contributions from supporters going to mission-related water projects in Africa. Naturally, the feature is entitled, "A Race for Water." It can be found online at http://gbgm-umc.org/global_news/full_article.cfm?articleid=5379.

A kind of "reminder" story on the late July/early August School of Congregational Development, slated this year for Evanston, Ill. The General Boards of Global Ministries and Discipleship sponsor the event jointly, and it usually makes a fair amount of news. This release is online at http://gbgm-umc.org/global_news/pr.cfm?articleid=5380.

An article on the history and value of Schools of Christian Mission is new on the Women's Division/UMC site, written by deputy general secretary Harriett Olson. It is at http://new.gbgm-umc.org/umw/response/yours/?C=6144&i=27426http://gbgm-umc.org/global_news/pr.cfm?articleid=5380.

The drama will be presented in the sanctuary at 8:30 a.m. during the casual worship service led by the contemporary band, and 10:45 a.m. during the traditional worship service.  A free brunch will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall.
