News Briefs — The Conference

Leadership appointment changes

Bishop Mike Lowry announced Feb. 23 several top leadership changes, all effective June 2009. More details will be available in the March 6, 2009 Central Link newspaper:

Dr. Georgia Adamson — from Weatherford Dist. superintendent to assistant to the bishop and executive director for Mission Ministries

Rev. Gary Lindley — from Fort Worth Dist. superintendent to executive director for Church Growth & Development

Dr. Robert “Bob” Holloway — from senior pastor at First Graham UMC to Fort Worth Dist. Superintendent

Dr. Virginia “Ginger” Bassford — from senior pastor at Alliance UMC to Weatherford Dist. superintendent

A Word from the Conference Treasurer Harvey Ozmer

Before I was born President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”  As we are experiencing the uncertainty of the stock market, loss of jobs, and home foreclosures, it is easy to allow fear to take center stage.  And as it does it can well begin to creep in to our view of church finance.  But, let me remind you of the words of John Wesley who from his deathbed said, “The best of all is, God is with us!”

It is Faith, not fear, that will see us through these times. I believe it.  I believe that with my whole heart. I am reminded of the Exodus.  In Exodus 16:2-4, the Israelites complained bitterly to Moses that he had brought them into the wilderness to die.  Their complaints were fueled by the fact that they were starving.  Then God provided bread from heaven…and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day.” The real truth for the church is this: God still is providing enough for each day…for as we share our gifts we live in Abundance, not scarcity.  As Christians ours is a life of Giving, not receiving. Caring, not crisis. Spirituality, not materiality. Grace, not greed.

As conference treasurer, I want to thank all of you for your commitment to God and the Church.  Thank you for the many ways that you are in ministry in your community and your support of connectional giving that enables Christ’s work of changing lives to continue around the world.

Church & Society Reports on 2008 Legislative Priorities

When President Obama signed the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) into law this month he brought to four the number of successful 2008 legislative priorities of the United Methodist General Board of Church & Society (GBCS). SCHIP had been preceded last year by successful advocacy on behalf of giving ex-offenders a second chance, increasing affordable housing, and reauthorizing President Bush’s AIDS funding. Both the AIDS funding and SCHI, P proved to be significant accomplishments because the former increased funding and the latter increased the number of children covered by millions.

These successes were tempered with disappointment, however, on other priorities. The war in Iraq still goes on, global poverty continues unabated, and global warming remains a hot political potato no one seems to want to catch. For more details, visit www.umc-gbcs.org.

Church & Society Announces Series on 'Sex and the Church' — Begins March 2

'Theology of Sexuality' will lead off monthly series in agency's e-mail newsletter Faith in Action.

The UM General Board of Church & Society (GBCS) will present a series of articles that address critical aspects of human sexuality. The series, “Sex and the Church,” will run in GBCS’s electronic newsletter, Faith in Action, and will begin March 2 with “The Theology of Sexuality.”

Bishop Deborah Kiesey, GBCS board of directors president, and Jim Winkler, the social justice agency's chief executive, issued a joint statement announcing the monthly series. “We see it almost every day in the news in one way or another: HIV & AIDS; rising divorce rates brought on by marital infidelity; teen pregnancy; homosexuality and homophobia. The topic is sexuality,” their statement says. “It is important for us and the Church to address this issue and its impact on all of us.” “Sex and the Church” will provide theological, educational, scientific and sociological sustenance along with specific questions for dialogue and discernment, according to Kiesey and Winkler. Faith in Action appears on GBCS’s website, www.umc-gbcs.org Information on how to obtain a free subscription to the newsletter, which provides a roundup of education, advocacy, analysis and commentary on social justice issues, is available on the website.

UMCOR: One Great Hour of Sharing — March 22

What does refuge mean to you? Perhaps, thoughts of shelter or warmth come to mind? In some places, refuge may mean having an income or putting food on the table. In Afghanistan, people rely on goats for their refuge. Cheese, yogurt and breads are made from goat’s milk and sold in the market, providing a family with security, substance and better health. Giving to One Great Hour of Sharing covers UMCOR’s cost of doing business and allows us to keep our promise that 100 percent of every other gift you make to a specific UMCOR project can be spent on that project and not on administrative costs.

One Great Hour of Sharing is March 22. Order your free offering envelopes or posters by calling 888-346-3862. Offerings to this fund can be made all-year long. Please give now. UMCOR provides emergency relief in many areas of the world. To find out more about UMCOR's ministries, please visit umcor.org. You can donate to any project by placing a contribution in the offering plate at a local United Methodist church; by sending a check to UMCOR, PO Box 9068, New York, NY 10087-9068; or by calling 1-800-554-8583, where credit card donations are accepted. You can also give online by clicking on any of the "Give Now" links. UMCOR is exempt from tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of the U.S. and qualifies for the maximum charitable contribution deduction by donors.

US: Eco-Palm Benefits for Palm Sunday
Purchasing Eco-Palms benefits the environment, empowers small-scale farmers and creates local jobs while helping rural communities prosper. The harvesting of Eco-Palms preserves the vitality of forests in places like Guatemala and lessens the risk of these forests from being converted into agricultural fields. Buying Eco-palms directly from the grower eliminates the need for a contractor and allows for more money to stay within harvesting communities. It also increases employment opportunities for women and helps them support their families. Palm Sunday is April 5. Why not purchase your Eco-Palms today? Visit www.ecopalms.org to place your order online. The deadline for ordering Eco-Palms is March 2. You may also download an Eco-Palm Sunday church bulletin or power point slide to share with your local congregation. Give to UMCOR-SA&D, Advance #982188 that supports small-scale farmers.
