Rebirth of the “PGA” – Preacher’s Golf Association

One of the outgrowths of the January Clergy Time Apart Retreat was the decision to resurrect a Conference PGA (Preacher’s Golf Association).  However, the group would like to expand the golf opportunities to include both clergy and staff from conference churches and agencies. If you would like to receive information regarding future tournament events (approximately one a month) to be played throughout the bounds of the conference, please contact Larry Van Zile, associate director of the Central Texas Methodist Foundation, at larry@ctmf.org with your name, email address, average score or handicap. This information facilitates setting up fun tournaments with competitive teams for each event.

Congratulations, Woodway First UMC

First UMC of Woodway has been named an Official Welcoming Congregation for the 3rd consecutive year!  “Welcoming Congregations” are a select group of UM congregations nationwide that meets criteria, including embracing newcomers and providing opportunities in discipleship. The recognition program is part of a larger effort launched in late 2000 by UMCom, the denomination’s communications agency, to use modern technology and the common language of television to spread the Good News of Christ to a world in need.

Camp on the Road

Camp on the Road is an outreach ministry of Glen Lake Camp & Retreat Center designed to bring the summer camp experience to children who are unable to attend camp on-site. Helping Methodist Children’s Home

One way churches can help the Methodist Children's Home in their fundraising is to provide a copy of their church directory. These directories have lists of people who are already familiar with the needs of the children in the care of the Waco Campus, Boy's Ranch, Foster Care Outreach Offices, Transitional College Program, Grandparents as Parents and other ministries of MCH. Please help by sending your directory to: Trey Oakley, vice president for development, Methodist Children's Home, 1111 Herring Ave., Waco 76708. Phones: 800-853-1272 or 254-753-0181.

Help Maua Hospital Respond to Food Crisis in Kenya

Drought in Eastern Kenya has brought famine to the country, where a national crisis was declared in January.  Jerri and Bill Savuto, UM missionaries from the North Texas area, are currently serving at Maua Hospital and are seeking to address the great need there.  More and more children sick and dying from malnutrition are being admitted to Maua Hospital’s pediatric ward.  In a recent newsletter, Jerri said: “We can help these children recover from their illnesses and even gain weight but then we have to send them home to the same situation. The hospital has started a program to send food home with families of children like this.”  If you would like to make a contribution to help provide food for these children and their families, please send contributions through the conference office designated to “Advance Special #09613A – Maua Hospital Service Fund, Kenya” with the notation for “Feed the Hungry.”

Volunteer Opportunities at Mount Sequoyah

Mount Sequoyah, the retreat center for the South Central Jurisdiction located in Fayetteville, Ark., hosts a volunteer workweek each year during which volunteers help with maintenance, landscaping or other projects to keep the facility in good shape.  This year Mount Sequoyah will need more help than ever during the workweek, as the facility sustained a large amount of damage from downed trees during a recent ice storm.  Please consider participating in this mission opportunity from March 30-April 3.  The cost is $93.50 for lodging and meals, plus your cost of getting to Fayetteville. You may download the brochure and registration form under the “Programs & Events” link at www.mountsequoyah.com. If you would like to volunteer in response to the ice storms, but aren’t able to make the workweek, Mount Sequoyah will be in need of UMVIM teams this spring to help with roofing, ceiling repair, carpeting, sheetrock installation, and painting.  Eighteen of the buildings were damaged, and six had significant roof damage (i.e. holes that have been tarped and need to be reshingled). For photos of the damage, visit “News” link on the center’s website, plus a story with photos in this week’ Central Link newspaper (due out on Friday). Team leaders may contact director Sheri Altland at director@mountsequoyah.org.

UM Church Nurtures Hero Pilot

(UMNS) — His Sunday school teacher 50 years ago at Waples Memorial UMC in Denison, Texas, remembers him as Chesley. His sister refers to him by his middle name, Burnett. A prominent female clergy member of the UM North Texas Annual Conference knew him as Burney, her rival for first-chair flute in the Denison High School band. Since Jan. 15, much of the world knows him as the pilot of “The Miracle on the Hudson” – the pilot who made a successful emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 in New York’s Hudson River with no loss of life. Chesley Burnett Sullenberger III and his four-person crew were given keys to New York City by Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Feb. 9, a day after “60 Minutes” on CBS broadcast the crew’s first televised interview. Crewmembers also were cheered as heroes during the Feb. 1 pre-game ceremonies for Super Bowl XLIII. Wilson reminisces about growing up at Waples UMC in Denison. On Jan. 23 -- coincidentally, her brother’s 58th birthday -- Mary Wilson welcomed two journalists into her comfortable Plano, Texas, home -- one from her family’s church, Christ United Methodist Church in Plano, and the other from the conference newspaper. — By John A. Lovelace

UMs Respond in Aftermath of Buffalo Area Plane Crash

Clarence Center, NY (UMNS) — UMs have actively joined the effort to help those impacted by the loss of Continental Flight 3407. That flight was about seven miles from Buffalo Niagara Int’l. Airport when it went down around 10:20 p.m. on Feb. 12, striking a house in Clarence Center. All 49 people aboard were killed, along with one person in the house. UMs were among the first responders on the scene, law enforcement securing the area, clergy responding to calls, volunteers caring for the families of those lost, and many praying and asking “how can we help.” The local Red Cross called Don and Barb Weaver—veterans on the Red Cross Critical Response team and members of the Western New York Conference—for help early on Feb. 13. Within 20 minutes, they had pulled together what they needed … to set up a child-friendly place where many of the grieving families are staying. — By Marilyn J. Kasperek, director of communications for the UM Western New York and North Central New York Annual Conferences.

Winkler Applauds Passage of Stimulus Act

(UMNS)—Jim Winkler, top executive of the UM Board of Church & Society, issued a statement on Feb. 16 applauding Congress for passing the $787 billion “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act” because it will provide funding for critical programs that serve those hit hardest by the ongoing recession. The statement also praises efforts to orient the U.S. economy towards a sustainable environmental future. Winkler points out, however, that the package is not perfect. “We regret the decision to include tax provisions whose benefits accrue exclusively to relatively well-off persons,” the statement says. “While some relief for those taxpayers may have merit, it should not have been pursued at the expense of other low-income priorities and projects designed to promote the common good such as education and housing.” President Obama signed the act into law on Feb. 17 in Denver.

UMCOR: One Great Hour of Sharing — March 22

What does refuge mean to you? Perhaps, thoughts of shelter or warmth come to mind? In some places, refuge may mean having an income or putting food on the table. In Afghanistan, people rely on goats for their refuge. Cheese, yogurt and breads are made from goat’s milk and sold in the market, providing a family with security, substance and better health. Giving to One Great Hour of Sharing covers UMCOR’s cost of doing business and allows us to keep our promise that 100 percent of every other gift you make to a specific UMCOR project can be spent on that project and not on administrative costs.

One Great Hour of Sharing is March 22. Order your free offering envelopes or posters by calling 888-346-3862. Offerings to this fund can be made all-year long. Please give now. UMCOR provides emergency relief in many areas of the world. To find out more about UMCOR's ministries, please visit umcor.org. You can donate to any project by placing a contribution in the offering plate at a local United Methodist church; by sending a check to UMCOR, PO Box 9068, New York, NY 10087-9068; or by calling 1-800-554-8583, where credit card donations are accepted. You can also give online by clicking on any of the "Give Now" links. UMCOR is exempt from tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of the U.S. and qualifies for the maximum charitable contribution deduction by donors.

US: Eco-Palm Benefits for Palm Sunday
Purchasing Eco-Palms benefits the environment, empowers small-scale farmers and creates local jobs while helping rural communities prosper. The harvesting of Eco-Palms preserves the vitality of forests in places like Guatemala and lessens the risk of these forests from being converted into agricultural fields. Buying Eco-palms directly from the grower eliminates the need for a contractor and allows for more money to stay within harvesting communities. It also increases employment opportunities for women and helps them support their families. Palm Sunday is April 5. Why not purchase your Eco-Palms today? Visit www.ecopalms.org to place your order online. The deadline for ordering Eco-Palms is March 2. You may also download an Eco-Palm Sunday church bulletin or power point slide to share with your local congregation. Give to UMCOR-SA&D, Advance #982188 which supports small-scale farmers.
