Bridging the Gap: Connecting Church & Academy — Jan. 22-24
Early American Methodists had a vision to establish learning institutions around the nation. Bridging the Gap was developed out of the discussion of “Are Methodist institutions rooted in the original beliefs and values from which they were established?” and who attends these institutions. One of the five events developed around these concerns — one in each of the jurisdictions — will be held Jan. 22 at the Arlington Sheraton Hotel (1500 Convention Drive, Arlington, Tex. 76011). It is designed for leaders with the UMC, specifically those who work with young people and the leaders with all of its church-related colleges and universities. This includes:
• conference youth coordinators      • youth ministers and volunteers
• Christian education leaders            • chaplains
• church relations directors               • admissions/financial aid directors
• deans / presidents                            • conference connectional ministers
• chairs of higher education              • district superintendents / bishops

Under discussion will be the history of Wesley and higher education, development of student leadership, vocation and discernment, resources through church relationships, and opportunities from UM loans and scholarships. For more details, visit www.gbhem.org/bridgingthegap.

Clergy Time Apart — Jan. 13-14

A brochure with reservation information is available for download on the conference website. All single rooms at Summers Mill have been reserved. Submit Interpreter Subscription List by Dec. 16
The deadline is near for churches to assure that their new and continuing leaders receive the January-February 2009 issue of Interpreter magazine. Lists of subscribers received by Tuesday, Dec. 16, will be virtually guaranteed to receive the January-February issue. Submit your list later, if you need to, but know that there may be a delay in starting those subscriptions. UM congregations are each entitled to receive 10 World Service Fund-paid subscriptions to Interpreter magazine (5 print copies delivered to the recipients’ mailbox, 5 delivered digitally via e-mail). Additional subscriptions are $8 each. If you need the list of leaders now receiving the magazine, help with online enrollment, your GCFA number or password or any other assistance with the updating, please call Customer Service at UM Communications, (888-346-3862) or e-mail interpreter@umcom.org. If you submitted your Interpreter form through your district superintendent, please check to see that it has been entered. There is sometimes confusion that these forms are to be submitted directly to UM Communications rather than to the district office!

Young People Support Each Other Through Grants and Scholarships
Young people of the UMC awarded $201,200 this fall to their peers throughout the nation in order to support innovative approaches and paths to ministry. Working with the Division on Ministries with Young People of the UM General Board of Discipleship, young people (ages 12-30) supported their peers through providing funding to several scholarship and grant programs. There are two scholarship programs awarded by the division, the Richard S. Smith (racial/ethnic youth) and David W. Self scholarships. Youth in both programs must be active in their local churches for at least one year prior to application and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, be admitted to a full-time degree program in an accredited college or university, demonstrate a financial need, maintain at least a “C” average in high school and be pursuing a “church-related” career. These scholarships are a part of the UMC’s emphasis on leadership as one of four Areas of Focus. In addition to the scholarships, the division oversees grant programs to encourage youth to engage in service projects and to support other creative approaches to ministries for, with and by young people. These grant programs not only encourage leadership, but many also address a second Area of Focus: Global Poverty. The Youth Service Fund (YSF) was created by youth to support each other’s involvement in service. Currently 70% of all funds raised by the youth remain in their annual conferences with 30 percent supporting the international Youth Service Fund grants. At both levels, youth are the ones to decide who receives the grants. For more information about these scholarships and grants, to request an application, or to make a donation to YSF, please contact Sarah Smith of the division at 615-340-7184 or ssmith@gbod.org.

UM Church Mourns Deaths of Jet Crash Victims
A UM parishioner who died when a military jet crashed into her San Diego home was remembered as a devoted Christian, wife and mother. Young Mi Yoon was killed in the Dec. 8 crash, along with her 2-month-old daughter and her mother, said Kevin Lee, associate pastor of Korean UMC of San Diego. Yoon’s 15-month-old daughter was believed to have died as well. Dong Yun Yoon, the husband and father, was at work when the fighter jet crashed into the neighborhood while returning from a training exercise to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. The pilot ejected safely. Lee and Daniel Yonkak Shin, senior pastor at the San Diego church, visited Dong Yun Yoon at his sister’s house on Dec. 8. "We just hugged each other and cried and cried for a long time," Lee said. "We had a brief worship service, and gave him words of comfort from Scripture."
