Disaster Response Trip to Iowa — Sept. 12-20
In response to the spring floods in the Midwest this year, a conference-wide mission team will serve in Iowa from Sept. 12-20.  The conference is subsidizing this trip, and team leader Teresa Sherwood’s congregation of FUMC Mansfield is also subsidizing a portion of the travel cost, so the only expense will be $130 for lodging/meals while in Iowa and accident insurance (plus meals on the road).  The team will stay at Mt. Sequoyah (South Central Jurisdiction retreat center) in Fayetteville, Ark., on the way to and from the worksite. The reconstruction phase will be in full swing at that time, so the team members do not need to be trained in early response. You may download a registration form at www.ctcumc.org/disaster.  For more information, contact Teresa Sherwood at 817-473-6650 or Jennifer Bellamy at 817-877-5222.

Two New Ideas for Hunger Awareness
First, September is Hunger Action Month!  In the U.S., 35.5 million Americans live in food-insecure households, according to America’s Second Harvest. Food pantries struggle to keep up with the need for emergency food. UMCOR invites UMs to join America’s Second Harvest in its fight against domestic hunger. In September, through its Hunger Action Month campaign (formerly, National Hunger Awareness Day), America’s Second Harvest will host nationwide events including food drives, concerts, volunteer outreaches and advocacy work to help bring relief to hungry people in the U.S.  Please donate canned goods to your local food banks or collect a special offering. For more ways you can help, visit www.secondharvest.org or http://list.gbgm-umc.org/t/1354260/83691/329/0/?u= aHR0cDovL3d3dy5zZWNvbmRoYXJ2ZXN0Lm9yZy8%3d&x=35c935a2.   You can also give to World Hunger Poverty, UMCOR Advance #982920. http://list.gbgm-umc.org/t/135426/83691/178/0/?u=aHR0cDovL3 NlY3VyZS5nYmdtLXVtYy5vcmcvZG9uYXRpb25zL3VtY29yL2RvbmF0ZS5jZm0%2fY29kZT05ODI5MjAmaWQ9MzAxOTA4OQ%3d%3d&x=951679f3.  Second, you can help strengthen our voice on behalf of hungry people by urging your church to take part in Bread for the World Sunday http://ga4.org/ct/S7wAmm91CXT/. On Oct. 19 – and other Sundays in the fall – congregations and other faith communities will renew their commitment to ending hunger in God's world.  An array of free resources is available to help churches observe Bread for the World Sunday – including worship bulletin inserts, offering envelopes and bread bags (which are ideal for bake sales).  Please visit www.bread.org for more information.

Independent Feature Movie Tells Story of John Wesley
A perilous adventure on the high seas, a star-crossed love affair, mob violence, rioting, attempted assassination — not the elements one might expect in a film about the founder of Methodist. The director and producer of “Wesley” believes, however, that the dramatic and often surprising story of John Wesley will attract moviegoers of all faiths, as well as warm their hearts. The independent feature film traces the life of Wesley as an outwardly religious young man who undergoes a spiritual renewal that leads to a revolutionary ministry. Burgess Jenkins, whose film credits include “The Reaping” and “Remember the Titans,” plays Wesley. The film is scheduled for release as early as October. (from UMNS #345 by Jennifer Lind)

Florida Camp Instills Respect for the Environment
Summer campers at Riverside Retreat (LaBelle, Fla.) get their first lesson in conversation as soon as they sit down to eat. First they are issued plastic drinking cups to reuse during the week-long camp, instead of drinking from disposable cups that can clog landfills. Next, the food they put on their plates but do not eat is weighed — a demonstration of how much food is wasted. In all, the 65 campers leave behind 25 pounds of food scraps from their first meal. … At the next meal, the amount of wasted food drops to 10 pounds. (from UMNS #342 by Fran Coode-Walsh)
