News Briefs — The Conference

Flood Bucket Update
Local churches and individuals contributed a total of 288 complete flood buckets and two palettes of bulk supplies during the CTC Disaster Response flood bucket collection Sunday, Aug. 10. Revs. Judy Sands (retired) and Laraine Waughtal (Moody First/Moody-Leon) drove the supply truck to the depot at Baldwin, La., and returned Tuesday. In addition to supplies, funds have been committed and are being received in the conference office. With the extensive flood damage in the Midwest and the season for hurricanes upon us there is an ongoing need for assistance. Thanks, CTC, for answering the call.

Step Up Hospital for September Family Visitors
As families are preparing to back-to-school, they often think about settling into a first-time or new church home. So over the next few weeks, churches will want to be especially hospitable and in tune with the needs of young families. Kurt Gunz of YourChurchCanGrow.com offers several tips to help reach those guests:
     (1) Be on the lookout for people you have not seen before but also be looking for people you may know who have not been attending. Both newcomers and people coming back pick this time of year to make a fresh start.
     (2) Alert everyone on your hospitality team about how important this time of year is. Inform your greeters to be especially sensitive to new visitors and put your outreach team in high gear.
     (3) Highlight activities or programs for families from the pulpit and in the church bulletin. If Bible class promotions happen for the kids, feature it. If there are end of summer youth activities, focus on them. If there is a family picnic planned, give it a plug.

Families with children are looking at your church and asking themselves if it is a place their family can fit in and if there are activities for their kids. By focusing on those things you are helping your visitors to get a real view of what you have for them.

Message from the CTC History Committee
The CTC History Committee has been working since 2006 on the History of the Central Texas Conference. Many members of this committee have been working on various topics and subjects. However, we are keenly aware that a great many members of this conference have been involved and participated in many areas, boards, commissions, and programs of the conference and have wonderful and insightful details to add to our story. We would like anyone that would like to contribute a recollection, insight, behind-the-scenes notation, story, or comment to do so. We have noted the various areas and topics we are covering. We have a Web site for this history at http://ctchistory.com There is also a blog (the place you can send these comments) at http://ctchistory.com/blog We would be ever grateful to hear from you with any anecdotes, serious stories of struggle, or just fond memories.. .

Building relationships with Ugandan children
If you are interested in building relationships around the world, what better way than to become pen pals with a child from the Humble United Methodist School in Uganda?  Many people in the CTC were touched this spring by the children visiting Texas with the Hope for Africa Children’s Choir, which is part of the Humble School.  Our conference hosted 23 children and their chaperones.  In addition to the choir, there are 280 children enrolled at the school that would love to connect with a person in the US. There is no financial obligation.  Please prayerfully consider participation in this meaningful opportunity.  If you are interested in signing up to simply write to a child in Uganda, please e-mail Rebecca Harrison, from Silver Creek UMC in Azle, at mommyonthego@juno.com. Rebecca has already begun coordinating the exchange of letters between Humble School children and their sponsors from the CTC.  You may also contact her about opportunities for various levels of sponsorship, which allows orphans and vulnerable children to attend the Humble School.

CTC Fall Summit MISSING: YOUNG ADULTS — Sept. 6 at First UMC Mansfield
This year’s Fall Summit, sponsored by the Conference’s Mission Ministries, will focus on ministering to and with young adults. Target audience: pastors, church leaders, and anyone concerned with the future of the church. Go to www.yasummit.com for registration and details.

Disaster Response Trip to Iowa — Sept. 12-20
In response to the spring floods in the Midwest this year, a conference-wide mission team will serve in Iowa from Sept. 12-20.  The conference is subsidizing this trip, and team leader Teresa Sherwood’s congregation of FUMC Mansfield is also subsidizing a portion of the travel cost, so the only expense will be $130 for lodging/meals while in Iowa and accident insurance (plus meals on the road).  The team will stay at Mt. Sequoyah (South Central Jurisdiction retreat center) in Fayetteville, Ark., on the way to and from the worksite. The reconstruction phase will be in full swing at that time, so the team members do not need to be trained in early response. You may download a registration form at www.ctcumc.org/disaster.  For more information, contact Teresa Sherwood at 817-473-6650 or Jennifer Bellamy at 817-877-5222.

There are also spots open for the fall mission trip to UMCOR Sager Brown Depot in Baldwin, La., Oct. 12-17. Trip information is also at www.ctcumc.org/disaster. You are encouraged to periodically visit this web page for the latest information regarding how you can get your churches involved in responding to disasters near and far.

News Briefs — The Denomination

Appreciating our right to vote and the courage of our young people
It’s articles like the one Linda Bloom did yesterday for UM News Service that remind us of how precious is our right to vote in a free election and the courage of our young people. The story, in part: “When a presidential runoff election was scheduled for the end of June in Zimbabwe, the Student Christian Movement of Zimbabwe was among those informing youth about their voting rights and responsibilities. On June 10, police raided the movement's offices at the Ecumenical Centre in Harare, confiscating computers, laptops, digital cameras and a minibus. They also arrested five staff people, including a woman who had her 7-month-old baby with her. The five were soon released without charge, but the movement said it considered the arrests and detentions ‘part of the broader campaign of intimidation orchestrated against defenseless citizens.

“Since then, the Student Christian Movement of Zimbabwe has continued to speak out. And it has been backed by more than 100 similar movements around the globe that together form the World Student Christian Federation. Most participants are 18 to 35 years old. Federation representatives, meeting Aug. 1-9 in Montreal for their general assembly, squarely aligned themselves with the Student Christian Movement of Zimbabwe and expressed deep concern about continuing human rights abuses there, especially as directed against women and youth.”

Study guide offers steps on Darfur involvement
A biblically based study, developed to accompany a best-selling book on the crisis in Darfur, is available to help the Christian community mobilize against atrocities in Sudan. Not on Our Watch Christian Companion: Biblical Reflections on the Mission to End Genocide in Darfur and Beyond is an eight-week study written by Bill Mefford, director of civil and human rights for the United Methodist Board of Church and Society, and Greg Leffel, president of One Horizon Foundation. The authors, who are receiving no payment for their work, told an Aug. 7 press briefing conducted at The United Methodist Building across from the U.S. Capitol that they intended to create a resource that crossed all theological lines in the Christian community. The Not on Our Watch Christian Companion is available in paperback and sells for $7.50. Copies can be ordered through http://www.darfurchristianaction.org online. The Web site includes activities to accompany the resource. The Christian Companion was published by The ENOUGH Project in association with the Board of Church and Society and One Horizon Foundation. ENOUGH is a project of the Center for American Progress to end genocide and crimes against humanity. It was founded in 2007 with an initial focus on the crises in Sudan, Chad, eastern Congo, northern Uganda and Somalia. (Story by Wayne Rhodes)
