Opportunity to partner with Hurricane survivors in Southwest Louisiana

Two years after Hurricane Rita there still remains over 3,000 families in trailers and/or living in homes damaged by the hurricanes. Most of these families have little or no resources to make the necessary repairs to their homes and current programs and services cannot speak to the need alone. Area volunteer coordinators are asking local groups from churches, civic organizations, sororities, fraternities, business and corporations to “Adopt A Family” and help them repair and rebuild their homes.  The Central Texas Conference is proud to have a partnership with the Lake Charles Disaster Recovery Station, part of the disaster recovery ministry for the Louisiana Conference.  Please consider seeking opportunities for your church to adopt a family in need of assistance with recovery.  Please visit www.ctcumc.org/disaster for more information.

Charles Wesley timeline available

In celebration of the 300th anniversary of Charles Wesley’s birth on Dec. 18, the General Board of Discipleship offers an interesting timeline of his life that can be found at http://www.umcworship.org and downloaded for inclusion in church newsletters, bulletins, etc. Did you know that he wrote more than 6,500 texts, including poems and hymns. His range of poetic meters demanded the composition of new tunes and rhythms. His use of Scripture in his texts is unprecedented, with only the books of Obadiah, Nahum, Zephaniah, and Third John not used. He and his brother John published 64 collections of hymns between 1738 and 1785, many of which consisted of only Charles’ texts.

Five people died in two separate incidents Dec. 9, including a gunman, and five others were wounded. Bishop May, interim chief executive of the UM Board of Global Ministries, issued a Dec. 10 statement lamenting the loss of life from the two incidents. "May God heal the bodies of survivors and the grief of those who mourn the dead," he said. (UMNS)

Africa University honors Murapa's service

While Africa University has grown in size and enrollment in the past 10 years, an even greater future lies ahead, according to the school's outgoing vice chancellor. The UM-related school has more than doubled its student population to nearly 1,400 during the past decade, but Rukudzo Murapa said the university "has just yet touched its potential." Murapa told a gathering in his honor that the "greater horizon is out there," and the university community must pull together with one mind and in one direction to reach it. "Whoever named the university 'Africa,' for whatever reason they had, has given this university a challenge," he said. "... It is a dream the size of the continent called Africa, and it must be realized for the continent." Diplomats, business people, church and community leaders, alumni and students came together in a Nov. 30 farewell extravaganza to honor Murapa and his leadership of the pan-African school. Last October, Murapa decided to step down as vice chancellor of the university, ending nearly 10 years at the helm. The Africa University Board of Directors appointed Fanuel Tagwira, dean of agriculture and natural resources, as the school's interim leader, effective Dec. 1.

Depression is real in our churches, our communities

There is a critical need for mental health services in our communities and our churches can help. Pastors have already or will receive soon a letter from the Depression Connection Team with three requests. Please take them seriously and cooperate for the sake of those within your congregation who are struggling with depression — either personally or along with their family member(s) or friend(s). Here’s what you can do to help educate and/or refer to consultation and support groups:

(1)  Appoint two volunteers from the congregation who are familiar with and interested in mental health concerns to coordinate an educational seminar. Without encouragement, many people are intimidated or stigmatized about acknowledging their difficulties with mental illness.

(2)  Obtain committee support to assume responsibility for planning and promoting the mental health education seminar.

(3)  Host a Depression Connection Team Seminar facilitated by Tony Campbell. Funding is available for educational seminars through a grant from the Central Texas Conference Committee on Mental Health, coordinated by Bliss Dodd.

Depression Connection program coordinator Ed Jones is available to assist your church with the

logistics of scheduling an education seminar, providing promotional materials, and assisting in identifying  existing support groups or establishing a support group at your church. Contact him at 817-810-9599 or depressionconnection@ce-corp.net.
