Want to Learn Spanish?

Many of you have expressed interest in learning how to speak Spanish in order to address the spiritual and physical needs of the growing immigrant population.  We in the office are always brainstorming ways that make language-learning accessible to as many people as possible.  Below you will find a list of opportunities put on both by our office and outside it.

Offered by the Office of Hispanic Ministries:

·        Learn Spanish on the Computer--In order to expand opportunities to learn, we have set up a computer station here in the Conference Office Resource Center with a well known language learning program.  The program accomodates beginner 2-intermediate learners.  With this program you can learn at your own pace and at times that fit your schedule.  Please give us a call (817-877-5222) to set up your first visit!

·        10 Week Spanish Course--The Office of Hispanic Ministries can guide and resource a beginners Spanish course in local churches.

Other Learning Opportunities:

·         Overseas Immersion Opportunities--The best and fastest way to learn Spanish is to take immersion classes in a Spanish speaking country.  Even one week immersed in another country will improve Spanish skills dramatically.  Programs recommended by this office are:

o   www.cemanahuac.com –a program in Cuernavaca, Mexico which offers a discount for religious workers.

o   www.sakribal.com –a program in Guatemala (4 hours outside of Guatemala City).

·         College Classes--Local community colleges and university are always offering Spanish classes.

How the Office of Hispanic Ministries Can Help You

We in the Office of Hispanic Ministries understand that the connectional system in the United Methodist Church is often underused because the general population lacks the necessary information.  Thus we would like to make it clear how this office might be a resource to you and your church.  Among other things, we help with:

· Demographic information through Claritas and Percept programs

· Consultation with mission/outreach committees for proven programs with the Hispanic population (i.e. children and youth ministries, ESL ministries, Spanish ministries, multicultural worship ministries, cultural awareness,  building leadership)

· Provide Pentecost Journey and other training for the church's ministry with Hispanics

· Provide a sounding board for pastors and church members who find  themselves at all levels of Hispanic Ministries (or no level at all)

· Offer training on practical, spiritual, and theological elements of the Gospel as it relates to the Hispanic Community in partnership with the Bridges of the Spirit Institute for Hispanic-Latino/a Ministries

· Work in consultation with Church Growth and Development for congregational revitalization

· Offer monetary support for existing and new programs in consultation with the Hispanic Ministries Office

Our office is eager to be a part of your ministry's growth in many capacities that both include and surpass the above list.

If we accept the struggle to appreciate diversity in our community and our church, we not only are responding to God's commandment to love our neighbor, but we are also fulfilling the other great commandment to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.  --Eric H.F. Law
