Mission Team Returns to Haiti
by Nicole Hutchison*
Seven adults from two Central Texas Conference congregations are bringing the love of Jesus Christ to Haiti. Members from First United Methodist Church Joshua and Genesis UMC in Fort Worth will arrive in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and then travel (approximately 2 hours via tap-tap vehicle) to the coastal community of Leveque to help in the ongoing reconstruction efforts of the church there. The original church building was one of the many damaged beyond repair in the Jan. 2010 earthquake that registered a 7.0 on the Richter scale. Previous UMVIM / UMCOR mission teams have already completed the school building. Leveque is also home to Haiti's largest deaf community, providing an incredible opportunity for the team members to be in ministry through hands and works instead of audible words
The team, which departs Wednesday, Oct. 10 and is scheduled to return Oct. 19, includes Rev. Lara Whitley, Alan Easterling, Nicole Hutchison, Sue Beaton, Steve Reed, and Diane Collins from FUMC Joshua and Mike Nipper from Genesis. For co-leaders Alan and Nicole, this is their second trip to Haiti in 13 months, and it’s Rev. Lara’s third journey to the impoverished nation since October 2010.
Please pray for these and all our CTC brothers and sisters involved in mission projects around our communities and the world. To follow the team's progress, visit www.joshuaumc.net and "like" the church's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/FirstUMCJoshua.
